Chapter Eighteen

Caroline

Crap, how had this happened? One moment I was pleading with him to see sense, for salvation, and the next, I was stripped, and somehow, I’d given myself away. Harper knew about Fern, or at least, he’d worked out something had happened with her, and now he wanted to know what.

I yelped at the unexpected swat to my ass cheek, lurching forward over him as he reclined his seat a few inches.

“I’m going to ask you again, Caroline.” His voice smoldered, indicating he was entirely in his element as he tormented me. “I advise you to be a good girl and tell me what I want to know. You won’t appreciate being hogtied in the middle of the meeting table while I drill you for more information.”

I shuddered at the prospect he described, an image of the table in question flitting into my mind.

“What happened to Fern?”

I sucked in hot ribbons of air through my nostrils, my head spinning, resting my face into his shirt. “I can’t...” my voice broke, the intensity of everything that had happened resurfacing. Not only had I been incarcerated in the hellhole of Fortorus, but in the last week, I’d been threatened, nearly attacked, and paraded in front of the presidential team, as well as the rollercoaster of everything that had happened between Harper and me. Hell, I’d tried to kill the man, hadn’t I, though I still wasn’t really sure if murder had been my intention, the events of that evening hazy in my mind, and then there was the matter of my escape. The exhilaration, the joy of seeing Fern, the rush of hope and possibility, before I’d been dragged back here to face the music, but Fern—Fern had got away. Fern was out there somewhere. She was free.

“Of course, you can.” His voice was smooth, one palm running down the length of my hair. “Tell me the truth, little girl.” His tone was insistent. “Tell me now, and I’ll be a kind master.”

“Sir.” I lifted my head, searching for his face. He’d follow through with his threats to get what he wanted. I knew he would. “Please, I don’t know what to tell you.”

That was a crock of shit, but I was desperate. My feelings were conflicted between loyalty to Fern and her one chance of freedom and my own sorry predicament.

He glowered at me, his expression knowing. Harper may be the one under me, but there was no doubt about who was in charge at this moment.

“Yes, you do.” His voice was soft and alluring. “You’ve seen Fern, haven’t you?” He edged higher in his seat. “You saw her when you escaped.”

Just like that, the pieces of the puzzle fell into place in his mind. I actually saw the moment the recognition flickered into place in his eyes, his body straightening until I slid down his body.

“That’s what happened, isn’t it, Caroline?”

“Adam,” I mumbled his name into his skin, my heart breaking wide open, the pain so great, it filled up the space in my chest until there was no room for air.
